Developed by Greg Glassman, CrossFit is a fitness program that emphasizes high-intensity functional strength movements from disciplines such as rowing, running, weightlifting and gymnastics, among others. CrossFit, which has increased in popularity since its inception, also stresses competition and comradeship among participants to help improve fitness gains.
A CrossFit workout is known as the workout of the day (WOD). Each WOD is varied with different movements and levels of intensity, and utilizes scoreboards and stopwatches to measure performance. Examples of WODs include:
-As many circuits of a 200-meter run, 50-foot handstand walk and a 30-second handstand hold as possible in 12 minutes.
-Timed rounds of thrusters, weighted pull-ups and burpees, for five total rounds.
